Long Weekends Are The Best Weekends

Eating in UnderwearFor my first attempt at writing this post, I was using a laptop while lounging on our new hammock out on the back deck. Sweet set up… except for the fact that the laptop kept freezing up. Score another one for the Mac I suppose. Anyway, it’s been a few days since I’ve posted on here, but I guess it’s good because it means I do actually have a life outside the internet. Alicia and I had our one year wedding anniversary yesterday, which is really strange to say because it makes it sound like we’re just newbs when it comes to our relationship, when in fact, we’ve actually been together for almost 14 years now. But maybe it’s best that the counter got reset since I was starting to lose track of the time! It also reminded us that at this point last year we were living it up over in Greece, which made it all the more important that we get some new travel plans in motion again for this year.

In other personal news, our good buddy Chopper (Jr. that is) got the chop this week. We felt so guilty for having the poor guy neutered, but I know it’s for the greater good because Bob Barker told me so. Crazy to think he is already 7 months old… then again, looking at the size he is now, it’s crazy that he is only 7 months old. We expected him to come back from the vet with one of those cones around his head to keep him from chewing on his stitches, but instead she just told us to put a pair of old boxers on him instead. And really, how could we resist advice like that?

I have almost completely made the switch over to the iMac now… I disconnected my PC and haven’t had to turn it on for a couple of days, which is a good sign. Assuming that the recording of this week’s Film Junk podcast goes smoothly with GarageBand, I think I can safely unplug it for good. There were some small problems that have cropped up during my transition, but thanks to the ever-resourceful Mac community, most of my problems had easy solutions. I’m putting together a detailed post on everything I’ve gone through that will probably be ready by next week. I will say this: I like the Mac OS a lot, but I still don’t see it as being all that different. The difference is a subtle one, and the word I would use to describe it is “elegance”. You can tell everything on a Mac was made with the user in mind, although in most cases the end result is the same. I still don’t understand why Mac users are so damn smug though… I don’t think I’ll ever turn into one of those hardcore Apple supporters. I still have to use a PC at work, after all.

You may have noticed that I added my del.icio.us booksmarks in the sidebar over there. This should give you a little extra incentive to visit this site on a regular basis, as even on the days when I’m not writing a full post, I’ll still be adding new links. You never know what you might find, so be sure to give it a look every now and then, or better yet, add me to your del.icio.us user list!

As for the rest of the long weekend (Monday is Victoria Day here in Canada… another one of those weird ties we still have to England you know), we’re going to see !!! tonight in Toronto, and having a good old-fashioned BBQ with some friends tomorrow. The rest of the time I’ll be relaxing in the hammock. That’s the plan. What are you doing with your long weekend?

Can you believe it? Pop Candy tells us that Jenna Fischer, aka Pam Beesley from The Office, recently sustained a fairly serious injury after falling down some marble stairs in high heels. She fractured her lower back in four places, although apparently she is expected to make a full recovery and will not miss any time on The Office. This is made even more sad after watching Thursday’s heart-warming season finale.

There’s a rumour going around that Nintendo Power may be officially shutting its doors in the near future. Apparently the magazine is struggling to hold on to a readership, which is not a big surprise considering that most game magazines have been hit hard by the rise of blogging and other forms of journalism on the net. The facelift that the publication underwent last year was a bit of an improvement, but I still don’t think it’s something that older gamers would read. At any rate, it’s too bad because this is a magazine I grew up with and used to look forward to reading every month. Maybe the plans to create a Nintendo Power channel on the Wii will simply result in a new delivery medium for the magazine. Time will tell.

I love this story. According to Fox News, a group of kids at the University of Wyoming realized that after purchasing a Playstation 3, they simply had no use for their old PS2 anymore. The owner of the system decided to show his disgust for old technology by literally urinating on the unit — unfortunately it was still plugged in, and he received a nasty shock that briefly knocked him unconscious. Retro gaming gets its revenge!
